D. HOWARD HITCHCOCK (American, 1861-1942).
David Howard Hitchcock was born in Hilo, Hawai’i in1861. His father, a judge, wanted him to study law, but after attending the Punahou School, then Oberlin College in Ohio, he began to take an interest in art.
The artist Tavernier saw some of young Hitchcock’s stetches of Hawaiian wilderness and encouraged him to study art. Hitchcock went on to study in Paris, and he entered a painting in the Paris salon of 1893. After his return to Hawai’i Hitchcock painted landscapes including one of the Kilauea volcano which he painted after visiting the volcano with Tavernier and Joseph Strong. He became known as one of the founders of the “Volcano School” of Hawaiian painting.
In 1899 the newly established Bishop Museum added four Hitchcock paintings to its collection including images of Kilauea and Mauna Loa’s Mokuaweoweo Crater.
Hitchcock rapidly became a fixture on the Hawaiian art scene, and according to a 1915 Honolulu guidebook, Hitchcock’s studio on King Street was open to the public every Tuesday and Friday. For years, his 1927 oil painting of the goddess Pele greeted visitors the the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.
In May 1936 in conjunction with the Honolulu Academy of Arts, The Association of Honolulu Artists held a special exhibition of member D. Howard Hitchcock’s work celebrating his seventy fifth birthday.
Hitchcock was a prolific painter who continued working until his death in 1942 at the age of eighty-one.
