FRANK TENNEY JOHNSON (1874-1939)

Born near Big Grove, Iowa, Frank Tenney Johnson, became one of the most famous early 20th-century painters of Western genre. Johnson was a painter of the Old American West who popularized a style of painting that became known as “The Johnson Moonlight Technique”. His painting techniques included the use of palette knives, brushes and even his fingers.

Johnson was raised on a farm on the old Overland Trail where he observed western migration of people on horseback, in stagecoaches, and in covered wagons.  At the age of 10 he moved to Milwaukee and was apprenticed there to the panorama painter F.W. Heine (1845-1921), a specialist in equine subjects. From that time forward, Johnson developed into a skilled painter of horses. He later studied with Richard Lorenz, a member of the Society of Western Painters, who gave Johnson valuable technical advice and a feeling for Western subjects.
